Introduction: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection that affects the pediatric population and typically occurs in the form of outbreaks. The aim of this study is to describe the behavior and geo-spatial analysis of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Colombia from January 2019 to March 31, 2022, using the records collected in the Public Health Surveillance System (Sivigila).
Methodology: retrospective and descriptive research, primary source of Sivigila data from January 01, 2019 to March 31, 2022. Secondary sources: epidemiological field investigations of territorial entities. Results: A total of 254 cases of hand-footmouth syndrome were collected from Sivigila. The mean age was 6.8 years (mean: 3 years), with a range from 0 to 35 years and a standard deviation of 4.28, [CI:3-4.05]. The predominant gender was male in 57.9% (n=147).
Discussion: The increase in notifications for the year 2022 compared to previous years in Colombia may be related to the return of students to educational institutions, such as kindergartens and community homes, after closure during the mitigation and control measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. In other countries in the region, such as Peru, outbreaks of this disease have been detected from March 31 to April 5, 2022, with 165 cases of HFMD in four regions (Ucayali, San Martin, Huánuco, and Amazonas).
Conclusion: In Colombia, an increase in the number of reported cases with a diagnosis of handfoot-and-mouth syndrome was observed for the first quarter of 2022 compared to previous years, especially in the departments of Norte de Santander, Santander, Risaralda, Caldas, Cundinamarca, and San Andrés.
