Abstract

Introduction: Populations in permanent confinement environments are at higher risk of COVID-19 spread. The Municipal Health Secretariat reported a cluster in an educational institution in Cundinamarca in February 2021. The objective was to characterize the socio-demographic, clinical and epidemiological variables of the cases confirmed for COVID-19 and their close contacts.

Methodology: outbreak study, cross-sectional descriptive. The information on confirmed cases and close contacts was collected by a survey using the WHO instrument. A close contact random sampling was conducted with a 95  % confidence interval and 8% sampling error, an active community search was performed, and various calculations, such as an epidemic curve, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency and dispersion, secondary attack rate, secondary infection rate, basic reproductive number, and generation time were determined.

Results: There were 49 confirmed cases and 106 close contacts. Of the confirmed cases, 51 % (25) were female; 63.3 % (31) were students aged 20- 24 years, with a mean age of 23 years. Seventy-three percent (36) of the cases had symptoms; of the manifested symptoms, 73.5  % (36) were headache and 71.4  % (35) were fatigue. During the active community search, 16 symptomatic students were identified. The secondary infection rate was 10.7  % (49/460), the secondary attack rate was 10% (46/460), the basic reproductive number R0 was 2.7, and the generation time was four days on average.

Conclusions: The outbreak was confirmed in the educational institution. It was recommended that control measures be strengthened due to the fact that unprotected interaction spaces promoted contagion.
