Introduction: Necoclí is a municipality in the department of Antioquia, located on the Atlantic coast, with 70 824 inhabitants. Since June 2021, detention of migrants from South America and Africa has been identified. This article presents some factors that may favor the occurrence of events relevant to public health. The objective of this study was to characterize the public health and migration situation in Necoclí.
Materials and methods: Descriptive study. To know the epidemiological situation, events of interest in public health were prioritized and unusual characteristics were identified. Active institutional search, SARS-CoV-2 realtime PCR, genomic surveillance and migrant settlements georeferencing were performed. Endemic channels, frequency distribution, central tendency and dispersion measures, and SARS-CoV-2 positivity calculation were completed.
Results: Approximately 14 500 migrants were identified in overcrowded conditions, mainly in Caribe and Simón Bolívar neighborhoods. Unusual characteristics were observed for malaria, dengue, acute respiratory infection (poisson=0,00) and variation >30 %. 98 cases were identified without notification to the surveillance system. A malaria outbreak with 91 cases was identified. 299 samples were taken for COVID-19, median age 40 years (IQR: 29 - 51), 14 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed (positivity of 4,7 %), variants of interest Mu (B.1.621) and concern Gamma (P.1.7) were sequenced. Actions were established to address health problems such as drinking water deficiency, waste management and cramped conditions; support was also given to strengthening surveillance and strategies to streamline migrants transit.
Conclusions: Backlog of migrants, deficiency in hygienic-sanitary conditions, COVID-19 and malaria outbreak were identified. It is necessary to continue developing comprehensive actions at the national, departmental and municipal levels with community participation.
