Migration and maternal-perinatal health in Colombia, 2017 – 2018

Introduction: migration in some cases is the result of the inequalities experienced within a country. It has been considered as a phenomenon that impacts the economic, social and cultural development of a country. One of the most relevant challenges of the migration process is universal health coverage and access, which depends on the legalization of the migratory status in the receiving country. This is of great concern to countries because maternal morbidity and sexual and reproductive health complications are frequent in the migrant population, with a greater impact on the incidence of low birth weight and premature births, as well as on maternal, neonatal and infant mortality indicators. Objective: to describe the trend of migration and maternal-perinatal health in Colombia between 2017 and 2018.
Materials and methods: quantitative, retrospective descriptive research. The source of information is secondary, through the weekly individual notification of cases to the Public Health Surveillance System (Sivigila) of events related to maternal-perinatal health: extreme maternal morbidity, maternal mortality and late perinatal and neonatal mortality. For the analysis of the information, absolute and relative frequencies were established. Joinpoint version 4.7 was used for trend analysis; significant differences were established with p<0.05, for a significance level of 95 %.
Results: the trend of the net migration rate has characteristics towards the increase; events related to maternal, perinatal and late neonatal morbimortality showed an increase for the migrant population.
Conclusions: the findings identified make it necessary for countries to develop strategies to strengthen the provision of health services and social policies aimed at reducing the conditions of vulnerability of this population and the intervention of the social determinants of health to mitigate negative health outcomes.
