Public Health Surveillance of Deaths in Children Under Five Due to Acute Respiratory Infection, Acute Diarrheal Disease, and Acute Malnutrition, Colombia, 2022

Introduction. The leading causes of death in children under five are infectious diseases, such as pneumonia and acute diarrheal disease, which are associated with malnutrition in 45 % of cases; a large percentage are preventable deaths. This article aimed to describe deaths in children under five due to acute respiratory infection, acute diarrheal disease, and acute malnutrition among residents of Colombia, reported to Sivigila in 2022. Methodology. A retrospective, cross-sectional descriptive study of deaths in children under five from Acute Respiratory Infection, Acute Diarrheal Disease, and Acute Malnutrition reported to Sivigila in 2022. Mortality rates were analyzed according to sex, age, area, territorial entity, and municipality of residence. Results. Nationwide, the mortality rate per 100 000 children under five was 8,6 for acute malnutrition, 10,7 for acute respiratory infection, and 2,2 for acute diarrheal disease. The combined mortality rate for the three events was 21,6. In 2022, 1,186 deaths were reported, with 813 confirmed: 325 (40 %) from acute malnutrition, 404 (49,7 %) from acute respiratory infection, and 84 (10,3 %) from acute diarrheal disease. The majority occurred in children under one year old (61,6 %), males (55,8 %), those enrolled in the subsidized health insurance system (75,8 %), and residents of rural areas (50,2 %). Conclusion. Nationwide, the mortality rate per 100,000 children under five was 8,6 for acute malnutrition, 10.7 for acute respiratory infection, and 2,2 for acute diarrheal disease. The combined mortality rate for the three conditions was 21,6. The highest proportion of deaths occurred in children under one year old, males, residents of rural areas, and those affiliated with the subsidized health insurance system.References
