Abstract

Introduction: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 cases reported to the epidemiological surveillance system in the arahuaco indigenous community. Additionally, it examined the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and beliefs of this population about SARS-CoV-2 infection in Pueblo Bello, Cesar, in 2022.

Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study. The total population was 16,439 individuals, with a sample size of 377 people surveyed using closed-response options and a Likert scale, processed using the statistical program Epi Info.

Results: The incidence rate for the Arhuaco indigenous population was 137.74; with a mortality rate of 3.27 and a fatality rate of 2.38. 77.5% perceived the disease as very dangerous, 92.6% considered traditional medicine as the main form of prevention, 63.0% practiced it, and 84.0% believed that ancestral knowledge has been strengthened. 83.3% used face masks to prevent COVID-19, 49.1% believed in the effectiveness of the vaccine, and 37.4% believed that COVID-19 was due to spiritual disharmonies.

Conclusion: The use of ancestral medicine is predominant in the surveyed population, being the most accessible and close strategy, playing an important role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. The surveyed population believes that ancestral knowledge has been strengthened, and traditional practices have increased.
