Introduction: Cundinamarca was the fifth most affected region in the country by COVID-19, with an accelerated aging population above the national average. This analysis characterized the disease in individuals aged 60 and older to establish recommendations for mitigating its impact.
Methodology: A descriptive study based on intensified surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection from March to August 2020. Descriptive statistics were conducted on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.
Results: 2,241 cases were reported, with an incidence rate of 515.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a mortality rate of 76.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (332 individuals), and a fatality rate of 14.8%. An increase in hospitalization and death rates was observed among individuals aged 80-89 years and in males compared to other age groups. 51.9% presented with cough, 33.5% with fever, 24.3% with difficulty breathing, and 20.9% were asymptomatic. 39.4% had hypertension, 17.8% had kidney disease, and 17.1% had diabetes mellitus. 32.2% were hospitalized in general wards, and 4.0% in intensive care units. Both symptoms and comorbidities increased proportionally in hospitalized and deceased cases compared to those managed as outpatients.
Discussion: The incidence, mortality, and fatality rates per decade in individuals aged 60 and older in Cundinamarca were lower compared to national rates, except for the fatality rate in the 60-70 age group, which was higher in the department.
