Abstract

Introduction: Gender and domestic violence occur at any stage of the life course. Older adults are an important part of the community; in some cases, they are responsible for the care of children, in addition to being transmitters of knowledge, experiences and wisdom. The identification of cases of gender and domestic violence in this population allows decision makers to include this population in programs for the care and prevention of violence. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of the notification of cases in adults over 60 years of age to Sivigila in 2019.

Methodology: Retrospective, descriptive study, the source of information was the national database of the notification to Sivigila of suspected cases of gender and domestic violence in adults over 60 years of age that occurred in 2019.

Results: 4,973 cases in older adults were reported to Sivigila in 2019, with an increase of 16 % compared to 2018, physical violence accounted for 46.6% of reported cases, psychological violence 25.7 %, neglect and abandonment 24.7 % and sexual violence 3 %. The departments with the highest notification rates per 100 000 older adults were: Amazonas 251.1; Huila 243.0; Vaupés 210.9; Cundinamarca 167.0 and Antioquia 145.0.

Conclusions: Gender and domestic violence in the elderly is a public health problem that continues to increase. It is important to promote research to identify risk factors for the generation of public health policies.
