Introduction: parotiditis is an acute viral disease, due to its magnitude it has been denominated by the World Health
Organization (WHO) as "endemic". The objective was to establish the trend and characterization of the event in Colombia between 2001 and 2018.
Materials and methods: a retrospective descriptive analysis in time, place and person was performed based on the notification made to the National Public Health Surveillance System (Sivigila) from 2007 to 2018, of parotiditis cases considering WHO statistics from 2001 to 2006.
Results: In Colombia, from 2001 to 2018 parotiditis affected more than 132 741 people, on average 7 374, 5 cases per year, the highest rates were reported in 2018 with 38.8 cases per 100 000 inhabitants, followed by 2017 with 35.6. The disease has presented a cyclical behavior every six to seven years for the country with higher incidences in 2005,
2011 and 2018.
Conclusion: Different authors have reported an increase in cases of parotiditis in the last decade in cohorts of vaccinated young people may be caused by the loss of immunity acquired by the vaccine, lower than expected vaccine effectiveness, insufficient complete vaccination coverage, short intervals between the two doses, high risk of exposure to the virus in young adults due to the characteristics of youth activity or discordance between the circulating genotypes and the vaccine strain.
